A carefully organized reference library can save enthusiasts time when information is scattered. The value is original organization, accurate explanations, and useful retrieval. It is not a license to copy books, scrape private communities, or sell other people's work in a new folder.
A small offer to test
Create a focused library of your own notes, comparison tables, and links to legitimate sources. Choose a low-risk hobby topic and explain what is included at launch.

How to start
- Identify repeated research questions and build a small taxonomy that matches how users search.
- Verify entries, record source dates, and distinguish facts from your recommendations. Link to external material instead of reproducing it without permission.
- Test navigation with unfamiliar users and provide a correction process. Keep a visible update log.
Finding the first buyers
People already spending time on the specialist hobby are the likely audience. A representative sample should demonstrate depth and organization.
Work through the economics
Twenty hypothetical $15 access purchases produce $300. With $70 in hosting, selling costs, and refunds, contribution is $230 before tax, overhead, and research time.
Contribution is what remains after the costs stated in the example; it is not take-home profit. Include unpaid sales time, setup, support, unsuccessful attempts, and any omitted overhead when deciding whether the idea is worth your time.
What can make it a poor fit
Stale information and copyright problems can undermine the whole product. Avoid high-stakes technical advice outside your expertise and keep rights records.
How much work continues?
Access sales can repeat, but the library requires curation and maintenance. A subscription is appropriate only if ongoing value is real and clearly described.
Your first decision point
Charge for a small complete reference section and observe which entries buyers actually use.
