Kirimas.com guide: Product Photography for Local Makers on a Small Setup
GUIDE · Creative Work · Active service

A maker with a good product may still struggle to show its size, finish, and details online. A small product-photography service can focus on consistent catalog images rather than elaborate advertising shoots. A controlled tabletop setup is easier to repeat than photographing every kind of product in every location.

A small offer to test

Start with five small products and three final images of each: a clean overview, a detail, and a scale or use view. Define background, styling, file size, and a single correction round.

How to start

  1. Photograph objects you own to build a sample set. Check color consistency and sharpness at the size customers will actually view.
  2. Create an intake inventory and photograph the condition of client items. Agree on delivery, return, and responsibility for fragile products.
  3. Show a test frame before completing the whole batch. Export consistently named files and keep an untouched original set.

Finding the first buyers

Local craftspeople and small online sellers are a natural starting audience. Offer a focused batch day so transport and setup time can be shared across similar items.

Work through the economics

A $250 session with $35 in materials and transport and five hours of total work leaves $215, or $43 per hour before tax, equipment replacement, and overhead. Large reflective products may need a very different quote.

Contribution is what remains after the costs stated in the example; it is not take-home profit. Include unpaid sales time, setup, support, unsuccessful attempts, and any omitted overhead when deciding whether the idea is worth your time.

What can make it a poor fit

Retouching should not hide meaningful defects or misrepresent color and size. Get approval for creative props and any use of client images in your portfolio.

How much work continues?

New collections can bring repeat bookings. Standard backgrounds and lighting reduce setup time, but handling, editing, and revisions remain substantial.

Your first decision point

Run one small paid batch and ask whether the images met the seller's actual listing requirements.
