Kirimas.com guide: Resume Formatting as a Side Hustle Without Promising Job Offers
GUIDE · Freelance Services · Active service

Some job seekers have useful experience but a resume that is hard to read or update. A formatting service can improve hierarchy, consistency, and editing without pretending to control hiring outcomes. It suits someone who is careful with documents and comfortable asking for clarification rather than embellishing a person's history.

A small offer to test

Start with formatting an existing one- or two-page resume into an editable document plus PDF. Include consistent dates, headings, spacing, and one revision. Make substantive career coaching or rewriting a separate service if you are qualified to provide it.

How to start

  1. Create two fictional sample resumes: one chronological and one for a career change. Test reading order by copying the text out of the PDF.
  2. Ask the client to confirm every employer, date, credential, and achievement. Keep uncertain information marked until they approve it.
  3. Deliver the source file, PDF, and a short note explaining how to update sections without breaking the layout. Avoid locking the client into your software.

Finding the first buyers

Local career groups, alumni networks, and referrals can supply initial conversations. Offer a precise document service with a visible sample. Avoid targeting people with promises that a new layout guarantees interviews or passes every applicant tracking system.

Work through the economics

A $75 formatting job taking two hours with $3 in allocated costs leaves $72, or $36 per hour before tax and overhead. Several rounds of rewriting can double the time, which is why the difference between formatting and writing must be explicit.

Contribution is what remains after the costs stated in the example; it is not take-home profit. Include unpaid sales time, setup, support, unsuccessful attempts, and any omitted overhead when deciding whether the idea is worth your time.

What can make it a poor fit

Resumes contain personal information. Use a secure transfer method and a retention policy. Do not include a client's document in your portfolio unless they expressly approve a redacted version.

How much work continues?

This is usually project work rather than a monthly subscription. A referral process and a clear template library can reduce acquisition time, but each document needs a fresh factual check.

Your first decision point

Complete a small paid batch and measure time from intake to acceptance. Keep the service only if clients understand the boundaries and the editing process remains manageable.
