A spreadsheet does not need advanced formulas to become a business problem. Duplicate rows, inconsistent dates, and unclear columns can make a simple customer or inventory list unreliable. A cleanup service works best when the client can describe what the file should support and you can demonstrate exactly what changed.
A small offer to test
Define a pilot around one workbook, a maximum row count, and a written list of transformations. Deliver the original unchanged, a cleaned copy, an exceptions sheet, and a short change log. Exclude bookkeeping judgments and data recovery unless you have that expertise.

How to start
- Build a sample with invented data that contains duplicates, mixed date formats, and missing values. Show the original and cleaned versions side by side.
- Agree on duplicate rules before deleting anything. Two people with the same name may be different customers, and a blank cell may be meaningful.
- Reconcile starting and ending row counts, spot-check records, and flag ambiguous entries instead of guessing. Keep formulas and plain values distinguishable.
Finding the first buyers
Small wholesalers, associations, and owner-operated businesses are possible buyers. Ask what task the file currently prevents them from completing. An offer tied to preparing an import or producing a reliable stock list is easier to evaluate than generic spreadsheet help.
Work through the economics
Consider a $180 fixed-price cleanup that takes four hours and incurs $10 of allocated expenses. The $170 contribution works out to $42.50 per hour before tax and overhead. A hidden second workbook can erase the margin unless extra files have a separate price.
Contribution is what remains after the costs stated in the example; it is not take-home profit. Include unpaid sales time, setup, support, unsuccessful attempts, and any omitted overhead when deciding whether the idea is worth your time.
What can make it a poor fit
Customer and employee files may contain sensitive data. Use the client's approved transfer method, request only necessary fields, and agree on deletion after acceptance. Do not upload private workbooks to an AI service without authorization.
How much work continues?
A monthly cleanup can become recurring work when the source process stays messy. Explain the underlying data-entry problem honestly; fixing it may be more valuable than charging forever to remove the same errors.
Your first decision point
Start with a paid, low-sensitivity file. Continue when you can reconcile every change and deliver within the agreed time allowance.
